In 1986, a group of dedicated Murphy High School teachers, concerned with providing able and motivated learners with a curriculum worthy of their intellectual needs, began to develop the highly prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. The Murphy IB Program, the second oldest IB Program in the State of Alabama, gained affiliation with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in January of 1992. The first diploma was awarded in 1995. To date, Murphy IB has graduated over 265 students in its program.
The IB Program is recognized by educators, nationally and internationally, as the most rigorous and challenging academic curriculum available for high school students. It is specifically designed for the most able and motivated learners, and allows them to reach their fullest potential. The Murphy IB Program is growing, and currently serves nearly 200 qualified high school students, of all socio-economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds, without regard to home-school boundaries. Any student admitted to the program automatically receives a transfer to Murphy High School and is eligible to play sports.
